Storing a color in the palette
If you're going to use a color a lot, you might like to add it to the palette at the bottom of the Color Chooser window. You can then choose the color just by clicking on it. The color will remain in the palette until you replace it with another color.
To add the current color to the palette:
- Ensure the Color Chooser window includes a palette with a spare well to hold your color.
- You can change the size of the swatch by dragging the borders just above and below. You may find a previous user has used these borders to hide the swatch; if so, drag the top border upwards, or the bottom border downwards:

- Palettes can have as many rows as you need, provided the window is tall enough to hold them. If you want to use an extra row, but can't get one to appear, drag the bottom edge of the window down to make the window taller; then try again.
- Drag the color from the color well to a square in the palette:
- Using the middle mouse button, click on the color well at the top right of the window.
- Keeping the mouse button depressed, drag the small color square that appears down towards the palette.
- When the tip of the pointer is over the correct palette well, release the mouse button to drop the color into the palette.
- If you decide that you don't want to put the color into the palette, just drop the color square somewhere else, such as on the background.
Using multiple palettes
As well as the Default palette, you can create additional palettes, and use the pop-up menu above the palette to choose which one to use:
- To create a new blank palette, choose Palette > New from the hidden menu (press the right mouse button over the title bar).
- To duplicate an existing palette, first ensure it is the current palette; if necessary, choose it from the pop-up menu of palettes. Then choose Palette > Duplicate from the hidden menu.
You can rename an existing palette:
- Ensure the palette is displayed; if necessary, choose it from the pop-up menu of palettes. Then choose Palette > Rename from the hidden menu.
In all the above cases, you will be asked to name the palette.

You can also delete a palette that you no longer need:
- Ensure the palette is displayed; if necessary, choose it from the pop-up menu of palettes. Then choose Palette > Delete from the hidden menu.
Saving and loading palettes
Your palettes are automatically saved each time you quit the Color Chooser, so you won't normally need to save them yourself.
However, you may wish to save a palette to disc - for example to keep a safe copy that you won't accidentally change, or so another user can use the same palette:
- Ensure the palette is displayed; if necessary, choose it from the pop-up menu of palettes. Then choose Palette > Save As from the hidden menu. A dialog box appears for you to name the file (see Locating a file).
To load a saved palette from file:
- Choose Palette > Open from the hidden menu, and select the file in the dialog box that appears (see Locating a file).
